11 Nations Unveil 2035 Climate Pledges Covering 36% of Global Emissions
Over 100 nations addressed the UN climate summit, with 11 countries unveiling new 2035 pledges that cover 36% of global emissions. UN climate chief Simon Stiell urged laggards to submit their pledges by the end of September.
The summit saw China pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 7-10% below peak levels by 2035. However, two-thirds of nations, including major emitters like India and Indonesia, have yet to submit their 2035 climate news.
The EU aims to submit its 2035 climate pledge before COP30 in November, but it is still finalising its 2040 target. The US, under former president Joe Biden, had submitted a 2035 pledge, but it is now considered void due to President Trump's order to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. Russia and Turkey also announced new climate news at the summit.
Initially, 95% of countries missed the 10 February deadline for submitting their NDCs. Now, around one-third of countries have submitted their 2035 climate news under the Paris Agreement.
While progress is being made, with 11 countries submitting new 2035 pledges, the majority of nations, including major emitters, have yet to commit to their targets. The UN climate chief has set a deadline of the end of September for laggard countries to submit their pledges, ahead of COP30 in November.
