Audio Specialist Aids Lake-Sumter State College in Reaching 'Audio Perfection'

In the bustling heart of Central Florida, Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) accommodates around 8,600 students each year, boasting a student-to-faculty ratio of 25:1. The rapidly expanding institution faces challenges in keeping up with the demands of its growing student body, particularly in terms of classroom and campus facilities. To address these concerns, LSSC recently updated the audio system in The Everett A. Kelly Convocation Center with amplifiers from LEA Professional.

This versatile gymnasium is the home base for LSSC's NJCAA volleyball team as well as a venue for local high school basketball games and tournaments. Beyond sports, the convocation center can also be transformed to host grand events such as award ceremonies, banquets, and special events. One annual event is Commencement. Unfortunately, the sound system in the gym wasn't cutting it for many activities taking place there, prompting the staff to reach out to Daniel Hunt, the director of business development at JSC Systems, to design and deploy a more effective AV system.

"Much like the typical gymnasium, LSSC experienced issues with lengthy reverberation," said Hunt. "Spoken words, whether during games or other events, came across as muddled at best, so we knew we needed a system with improved directivity." The existing system was also underpowered, and Hunt recognized that deploying amps from LEA Professional would provide a straightforward solution.

The system implemented by Hunt's team utilized Crestron Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), one courtside for handling event microphones and another housed in the sound booth rack. LED displays were installed on the walls, acting as both digital scoreboards and eye-catching decor. Danley Sound Labs subwoofers were flown in the center of the gym, with multipurpose horns mounted around the court. Hunt's team also added acoustic treatments to minimize reverberation even further.

Hunt deployed numerous Connect Series 704 amplifiers to power the subwoofers and horns throughout the gymnasium. These IoT-enabled four-channel amplifiers offer 700 watts per channel, multichannel connectivity options, and Smart Power Bridge technology, allowing the school to connect the built-in Wi-Fi access point or connect to the center's Wi-Fi or the local area network via Cat5 or Cat6 cable.

LEA Professional's Connect Series features LEA Cloud, enabling AV teams to remotely control and monitor the amplifiers regardless of their location or time of day. This remote control capability aids teams in working more efficiently.

"Managing reverb in a gym wasn't easy, given the high ceilings, hard bleachers, and parquet floors combined with down-firing loudspeakers," said Brian Pickowitz, VP of marketing for LEA Professional. "We're thrilled to have contributed to the improved audio experience at LSSC."
