Australians Across Parties Back More Aid as Opinion Shifts

A shift in Australian public opinion towards aid has been observed, with supporters of all major political parties, including the Coalition, becoming more likely to think their country gives too little. This trend, supported by research backed by the Gates Foundation, shows a clear increase in support for Australian aid.

The research reveals that the share of respondents who believe Australia gives too little aid has been rising by over half a percentage point each year. Conversely, the proportion of people who think Australia gives too much aid has been decreasing by nearly a percentage point annually. Both trends are statistically significant, indicating a clear shift in public opinion.

This change in attitudes is not confined to a single political bloc. While Coalition supporters have shown a marked increase in their support for aid, Labor and Green supporters have also become more favourable towards it, although the trend is less pronounced among the latter two groups.

The rising support for Australian aid, particularly among Coalition supporters, is encouraging for those advocating for increased aid. The overall shift in public opinion, with a decreasing number of people believing Australia gives too much and an increasing number thinking it gives too little, suggests a growing acceptance of the importance of international aid.
