Bangladesh Boosts Education Sector: Merit-Based Leadership, Salary Hikes Planned
The education sector in Bangladesh is witnessing significant transformations. The government is taking steps to appoint school leaders based on merit, while also tackling long-standing salary issues faced by teachers. A white paper on irregularities in the sector is also in the pipeline.
The Non-Government Teachers Registration and Certification Authority is now prioritizing competency in appointing head teachers and principals. Meanwhile, an initiative is underway to publish a white paper, exposing irregularities within the education system.
Last year, twelve dedicated teachers were recognized at an event for their exceptional work. However, the profession continues to face challenges, particularly in terms of remuneration. Officials have acknowledged that current salaries are inadequate for a decent living standard, trailing behind neighboring countries. Even primary school teachers, graded at the 13th level on the government's pay scale, earn less than computer operators and accountants.
In response, the government is implementing a monthly payment order scheme for new educational institutions. Senior officials have echoed calls for an increase in teachers' salaries and status, with an advisor to the interim political government's Ministry of Education emphasizing this at the 2025 World Teachers' Day in Dhaka.
These developments signal a concerted effort to enhance the education sector, with a focus on recognizing merit and addressing salary concerns. The publication of the white paper and the recognition of dedicated teachers are steps towards transparency and appreciation, while the proposed salary increases aim to improve the living standards of educators.
