Bidirectional Batteries: Renault 5 Owners Drive Cost-Free, smarter E Europe Showcases V2X Tech
The Mobility House and Renault are pioneering a project in France, allowing Renault 5 owners with bidirectional batteries to drive almost cost-free by feeding electricity back into the national grid. Meanwhile, Europe's largest energy industry trade fair alliance, The smarter E Europe, is set to take place in Munich from May 7 to 9, 2025, with a strong focus on Vehicle-to-X technologies.
The smarter E Europe is expected to attract around 3,000 exhibitors and over 110,000 visitors. Bidirectional charging, which enables vehicles to feed power back into the grid, will be a top theme. Dr. Frank Spennemann from Mercedes-Benz highlights its importance for grid stability and the energy transition. The special exhibition 'Bidirectional Charging' will showcase various Vehicle-to-X technologies.
Guided tours will offer insights into technologies, business models, and integration of Vehicle-to-Grid and other bidirectional charging solutions. With around 114 TWh of battery capacity from electric cars (cars) expected in the next five years, this offers a promising solution for power supply flexibility. The demand for flexibility in Europe's power supply is projected to double by 2030. In Germany, renewable energy's share of net electricity generation reached around 60 percent in 2024.
The Mobility House and Renault's pilot project demonstrates the potential of bidirectional charging. The smarter E Europe, with its focus on Vehicle-to-X technologies, will provide a platform for exploring this potential further. As the demand for power supply flexibility grows, bidirectional charging could play a significant role in the energy transition.
