Bremen's left-bank high school commemorates its milestone year along the Weser River
Gymnasium Links der Weser in Bremen Celebrates 50th Anniversary
The Gymnasium Links der Weser in Bremen, Germany, celebrated its 50th anniversary last Friday, September 6th. The school, which was formed through the merger of several separate institutions in 2008, has a rich history and a strong focus on modern, student-centered learning approaches.
Historically, multiple Gymnasien existed separately on the left bank of the Weser River in Bremen. In 2008, these institutions were merged to streamline resources and modernize educational culture toward more autonomous and differentiated learning methods for students. The merged school, now known as the Gymnasium Links der Weser, continues to develop innovative learning concepts and uses tools like Lernlog to support planning, feedback, and organization of student work in learning offices, especially in secondary education.
The merger took place in 2008, resulting in a school that focuses on self-directed and individualized student learning. The Gymnasium Links der Weser offers students the opportunity to obtain their Abitur after 12 or 13 years. The school's work also emphasizes equal opportunities, integration, individual promotion, and permeability, regardless of social background, nationality, and culture.
The school site's history predates the establishment of the Gymnasium Links der Weser in 2009, having hosted various schools over the past 50 years. At some points, as many as four schools shared the same facilities. One of the key institutions involved in the merger was the Gymnasium Obervieland, which, along with the Integrierte Stadtteilschule Obervieland, was merged to form the Gymnasium Links der Weser.
The Gymnasium Links der Weser has been collaborating with the Bürgerhaus Obervieland for almost 50 years. Cultural education and cultural events are planned together by the Bürgerhaus Obervieland and the Gymnasium. The Bürgerhaus Obervieland has been a vital partner in shaping the school's training concept for young talents, particularly in the context of holistic personality development.
For SV Werder Bremen, the Gymnasium Links der Weser is another important partner. The school's football profile aims to achieve an optimal combination of academic learning and athletic training. This cooperation project with Werder Bremen, the education authority, and the Bremen Football Association further underscores the school's commitment to holistic development.
The anniversary was celebrated with festive words from Maike Wiedwald (deputy headmistress), Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, Sascha Karolin Aulepp (senator for children and education), Uwe Sudmann (headmaster), and Stefan Markus (director of Bürgerhaus Obervieland). Susan Behnke captured the event in a photograph. The Gymnasium Links der Weser was praised as a "place of diversity" by Children and Education Senator Sascha Karolin Aulepp.
The Gymnasium Links der Weser is committed to fostering mutual understanding and strengthening intercultural competence among its students. This commitment is evident in the school's diverse student body and its focus on utilizing the potential of students from different cultures. As the school continues to grow and evolve, it remains dedicated to providing a modern, student-centered education that prepares students for success in a diverse and ever-changing world.
