Champlain Discovery Wins Outdoor Classroom Giveaway, Sparking Nature-Based Learning Trend
Champlain Discovery Public School has been awarded Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds' (BNP) annual OutClassTM Outdoor Classroom Giveaway. This win signals a growing demand for healthier, sustainable classroom alternatives and a shift towards nature-based learning in both rural and urban schools.
Over 25,000 contest entries reflect this increasing interest. Kristen Niemi, Director of Education with the Renfrew County District School Board, highlights the proven benefits of outdoor learning. The new outdoor classroom at Champlain Discovery is designed to enrich education, improve mental and physical wellness, enhance social development, and spark creativity. Tricia Robinson, Vice Principal of Champlain Discovery, anticipates it will transform learning by engaging students with nature and fostering creativity and teamwork. John El-Raheb, CEO of BNP, emphasizes that learning outdoors engages more senses, improves focus, and has lasting benefits even after students return indoors. The outdoor classroom's design can be adapted and enhanced based on evolving needs and preferences, ensuring its longevity and effectiveness.
With Champlain Discovery's win, the Renfrew County District School Board is poised to lead the way in outdoor learning. If plans proceed as expected, this outdoor classroom could be the first of several, signaling a broader shift towards nature-based learning in the region.
