China unveils fresh military academies in the course of the People's Liberation Army modernization endeavor

China Shifts Gears: Modernizing the People's Liberation Army with New Academies

China is revamping its military education system by setting up academies for its newly formed branches, as the People's Liberation Army (PLA) speeds up its modernization drive.

As per the defense ministry, the PLA Ground Force Service Academy will find its home in Hefei, Anhui province, while the PLA Information Support Force Engineering University will nestle in Wuhan, Hubei province, and the PLA Joint Logistics Support Force Engineering University in Chongqing.

These institutes will open their gates to high school graduates, with details about admission programs and enrollment to be unveiled in subsequent notices, announced ministry spokesman Jiang Bin on a recent Thursday.

Jiang explained that the move aims to adapt to the demands of restructuring military services and military talent training.

These academies will serve as a direct recruitment channel for the PLA's expanding branches, particularly the Information Support Force (ISF) and Joint Logistics Support Force (JLSF).

Since 2016, the PLA has been undergoing a structural overhaul, with the aim to reshape the Chinese military and ready it for modern, tech-savvy warfare by 2027, paving the way for a "world-class" military by 2049.

The PLA Ground Force Service Academy, formed by merging the Army Academy of Armoured Forces and the PLA Army Academy of Artillery and Air Defense, focuses on traditional army branches and ground force capabilities.

The PLA Information Support Force Engineering University, created by bringing together schools from the National University of Defense Technology and Army Engineering University of PLA, supports the ISF, responsible for military communications, networks, and information warfare.

The PLA Joint Logistics Support Force Engineering University, based on the Army Logistics Academy and the Army Military Transportation University, centers on logistics, transportation, and integrated support for joint military operations.

These academies, by are tailored to the operational demands of the PLA's modern service branches, reflect the PLA's restructuring and solidify its talent pool. By merging existing academies, they offer more specialized and advanced education in critical areas like information support and joint logistics support.

Moreover, recruiting high school graduates broadens the talent base, nurturing a new generation of military professionals who are schooled in modern military doctrines, technology, and skills from the get-go, supporting the PLA's modernization goals.

In essence, the new academies contribute to the PLA's modernization efforts by aligning military education with the evolving structure of its forces, fostering specialized talent, and supporting integrated, information-centric warfare capabilities vital for future wars. This enhances the PLA's military education infrastructure and talent pipeline significantly.

  1. The newly formed PLA Ground Force Service Academy in Hefei, along with the PLA Information Support Force Engineering University in Wuhan and the PLA Joint Logistics Support Force Engineering University in Chongqing, are aimed at providing education and self-development to high school graduates, aligning with the demands of modernizing China's military services and military talent training.
  2. The creation of the PLA Information Support Force Engineering University, a result of merging schools from the National University of Defense Technology and Army Engineering University of PLA, will facilitate education and learning in critical areas like military communications, networks, and information warfare, directly supporting the Information Support Force (ISF) of the PLA.
  3. The opening of new academies, such as the PLA Ground Force Service Academy and the PLA Joint Logistics Support Force Engineering University, will not only serve as a direct recruitment channel for the PLA's expanding branches but also contribute to the general news discourse on military modernization and education, as China strives towards its long-term goal of having a world-class military by 2049.
