City, University of London Student Wins £1,000 Fintech Scholarship for Women in STEM
Sabrina Abdow, a second-year International Political Economy student at City, University of London, has been awarded a £1,000 bursary through the Fintech Scholarship. The scholarship aims to encourage more women into STEM jobs near me, a sector historically dominated by men with women comprising only 26% of the UK's technology workforce.
Abdow's winning submission highlighted the power of embracing financial technology for students. She will now have the opportunity for industry-related work experience with fintech giant Seopa, the firm behind one of the largest price comparison sites in the UK, Quotezone.co.uk. This experience could prove invaluable, given that 51.3% of entry-level jobs in the sector require previous work experience, asking for an average of 2.7 years.
The Fintech Scholarship is particularly timely, as the fintech industry faces three main hurdles: lack of gender diversity, tough criteria for indeed jobs, and lack of finance for relevant university courses. Abdow's win follows Harrison Lea, who won the scholarship in Northern Ireland in 2025 after graduating with a BSc in Finance from Queen's University Belfast.
Abdow's scholarship comes as 73% of UK students were shocked at the expense of university, with 76% needing to work part-time to afford it, and over half saying it impacted their studies. The Fintech Scholarship not only encourages women into STEM jobs near me but also provides financial support, helping students like Abdow navigate the challenges of higher education and the job market.
