Oberlin College and Conservatory Secures Funding from Truth Initiative to Foster a Tobacco and Vaping-Free Environment

College Oberlin receives grant from Truth Initiative, aiming to enforce tobacco- and vape-restricted environment on campus.

Oberlin College & Conservatory has received a grant from Truth Initiative, a national public health organisation dedicated to fostering healthier lives and a more resilient nation. The grant is aimed at implementing and enforcing a 100% tobacco/vape-free campus policy.

Truth Initiative leads the fight against youth and young adult tobacco use through evidence-based, market-leading cessation interventions. One such intervention is the EX Program, a free, proven-effective digital quitting platform developed by Truth Initiative® with Mayo Clinic.

The EX Program offers free behavioural support, text messaging, and an established online quit community. It brings together the best evidence-based tools and resources for quitting any kind of tobacco or nicotine product. Studies show that EX Program can increase the odds of quitting by up to 40%.

Besides Oberlin College & Conservatory, Truth Initiative has awarded grants to 15 other colleges and universities in the past two years to implement and enforce 100% tobacco- and vape-free campaigns. These include Alabama State University, Emory University, Florida International University, Florida State University, Illinois State University, Keck Graduate Institute, Montclair State University, Pennsylvania State University-Harrisburg, Salisbury University, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, Sonoma State University, University of Chicago, University of Missouri – Columbia, University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and more.

Tara Wood, EdD, Director of Student Health Promotion and Prevention Services, commented on the grant, "We are thrilled to partner with Truth Initiative in our mission to create a healthier campus environment. With the EX Program's support, we will empower our students, faculty, and staff to quit nicotine and take a significant step towards a tobacco-free life."

Two college leaders will spearhead educational efforts to engage students in the tobacco-free initiative. Oberlin College & Conservatory will also form a campus task force to assess tobacco/vape use and promote quitting.

E-cigarette use remains high among young adults ages 18-24, with nearly 1 in 5 at risk of lifelong nicotine addiction. Truth Initiative is committed to preventing youth and young adult nicotine addiction and empowering quitting for all.

Truth Initiative's Tobacco/vape-Free College Program has helped 168 college and university campuses institute tobacco-/vape-free policies. With the support of programs like the EX Program, Oberlin College & Conservatory joins this movement towards a tobacco-free future.
