New Comprehensive School in Altenessen-South to Open in 2026/2027
The City of Essen is set to establish a new comprehensive school in the Altenessen-South neighbourhood, with the school scheduled to begin operation in the 2026/2027 academic year.
The school, currently known as the Comprehensive School in the Park, will initially accommodate four classes and will start at an interim location, Karolingerstraße 93, due to rising student numbers. Construction on the main building, a six-story comprehensive school including sports halls and a neighbourhood center, has already begun in July 2025 and is scheduled for completion in early 2028.
Upon moving to the new building at Erbslohstraße 3, the school will operate with six classes in the secondary stage I. Projections suggest that 116 students per year can be accommodated in four classes, with the number expected to grow as the school expands.
The funding for the school's equipment, learning and specialist rooms, as well as administrative areas, will be provided from the existing budget of the school department. The municipal personnel costs for the school, including at least one school secretary and one school caretaker, will begin from August 2026.
Additional material costs for IT, telephony, and administrative personnel amount to 407,106 euros. The authority ensuring the financing of the premises at Karolingerstraße 93 for the provisional operation of the new comprehensive school Altenessen-South is the City of Essen's Department of Education and School Affairs.
During the interim period, the school will use specialist rooms in cooperation with other institutions. The security and order at the interim location will be ensured by the deployment of two school caretakers at the vocational college in the Bildungspark.
The final name of the school will be determined by the school conference once it begins operation. The city council will decide on the school's establishment on 24 September. The funding of the additional expenses in 2026 will be covered within the framework of the annual budget, and from 2027, it will be included in the annual budget.
Two additional positions will be necessary with the move into the new building. The rental of the buildings at Karolingerstraße 93 will be decided separately. Construction on the new building is part of the city council's decision to improve education facilities in the area.
