New Office and Seminar Building Planned for Free University of Berlin's Dahlem Campus

The Free University of Berlin is set to construct a new office and seminar building on its Dahlem campus, scheduled for completion by 2028. The project, named the Innovation Campus "FUHUB", will be built on the FUBIC site, with a usable area of over 6,600 square meters of flexible office and laboratory space.

The new building, estimated to cost 34.8 million euros, will be located next to the popular "Rostlaube" on Habelschwerdter Allee. The most popular building of the FU Berlin, the "Rusty Shed", will get a modern neighbouring building by 2028.

The architectural firm Heinlewischer Partnerschaft freier Architekten mbB has been commissioned as the general planner for the new building. The firm is responsible for the design of the office and seminar building at Freie Universität Berlin, Habelschwerdter Allee 45.

The new building will span over 6,400 square meters across three floors and will be constructed using wood and hybrid construction methods. It aims to achieve the BNB standard silver. The construction began on September 12, 2025.

The new building will house a modern centre for teacher training, the Institute for School Quality, and the Department of Economics. It will also feature two inner courtyards, spacious communication zones, and roof terraces accessible via a barrier-free entrance.

In addition to the office and seminar spaces, the "FUHUB" is aimed at companies in the fields of life sciences, robotics, and other technology-based industries. The construction of the building is part of a strategic project to strengthen teaching and research areas.

The "FUHUB" is being financed by the "Special Fund for Infrastructure of the Growing City", which funds infrastructure projects for schools, refugee accommodations, kindergartens, sports, youth, and digitization. The project also receives 10.8 million euros from "SIWANA" funds.

The construction of the new building is a clear signal in the direction of sustainable campus development. The outdoor area will feature a retention roof with a photovoltaic system, biodiversity areas, and 270 bicycle parking spaces. The lighting planning of the building is in the hands of Ulrike Brandi Licht, while Hellplan Ingenieurgesellschaft and Weber & Partner are responsible for the technical building equipment, and Wetzel & Von Seht handle the structural planning.

The completion of the "FUHUB" is an exciting development for the Free University of Berlin, marking a step forward in its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the fostering of a dynamic and collaborative environment for teaching, research, and industry.
