Construction of an accessible sports facility for a new school garners community support
The State Building and Real Estate Office Greifswald (Staatliches Bau- und Liegenschaftsamt Greifswald, SBL) is responsible for the execution of the new construction of an integrated school centre in Greifswald. This educational campus, scheduled to open its doors for the 2028/2029 school year, will cater to over 700 students from first to tenth grade.
The campus will include a three-section primary school, a 2.5-section regional school, a canteen, a kindergarten, and extensive outdoor facilities. The construction costs for the project currently amount to around 80 million euros, with additional funding coming from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE).
Innovative geothermal technology will be employed in the construction process. More than two-thirds of the drilled piles, totalling 333, will be activated geothermally. Plastic tubes will be woven into steel cages and set into boreholes for this purpose. Following this, drilling work for pile foundation and geothermal energy will commence.
The sports hall, approximately 24 by 45 meters and divided into three equal parts, will be equipped with markings for common sports such as football, handball, basketball, volleyball, and badminton. It will also feature a gym, a gymnastics room, an elevator, and a spectator tribune with wheelchair spaces. The sports hall and its adjacent outdoor facilities will receive eight million euros in funding from the EFRE.
Barrier-free access and two changing rooms specifically designed for wheelchair users will be installed in the sports hall. In addition, a heat pump and a photovoltaic system will be used for heat generation, with the majority of heat being provided by the Greifswald city works' district heating.
The construction work for the new inclusive school centre in Greifswald is currently in progress, with remaining earth excavation and infrastructure works for media and basic lines ongoing. The first classes are expected to move in for the 2028/2029 school year.
On August 29, 2025, Christian Pegel, Minister of Interior and Construction of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, handed over the funding decision for a new sports hall. A further 29 million euros in urban development funding will flow into the construction of the primary school with kindergarten and canteen.
Construction work for the sports hall and its adjacent outdoor facilities is also underway, with funding support from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE). This integrated school centre and sports hall are set to become significant additions to the educational and recreational landscape of Greifswald.
