Decrease in Trainee Registrations at Employment Agency by 10%
The Federal Employment Agency (BA) has reported a 5% decrease in the number of training places offered, with around 429,800 training positions available by April 2021. This decline is reflective of the ongoing challenges in the apprenticeship market in Germany, a situation exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite this, BA CEO Detlef Scheele encourages applicants not to be discouraged. He emphasises that there are currently more training places than applicants nationwide. The training year 2020/21 saw a decrease of 10% in the number of applicants, with around 345,000 applicants nationwide by April 2021.
The decrease in training places is particularly noticeable in technical professions such as automotive mechatronics and industrial mechanics. The hospitality industry and tourism are also seeing a decrease in training places due to the pandemic.
Scheele attributes the decrease in training applicants to difficulties in the ongoing corona crisis. School closures and the lack of internships offered by companies are contributing factors to the difficulty in finding training positions. Some young people are continuing their education or looking for other alternatives due to the uncertainty about how individual sectors will develop economically.
However, despite the challenges, there are still good chances for finding a start in working life. As of April 2021, there were approximately 250,000 unfilled company training positions, according to the BA. Last month, around 190,000 applicants had not yet found a training position or an alternative.
The BA CEO emphasises the training bonus as a means to encourage companies to provide for their own skilled workforce. Since August 2020, around 38,400 applications for training bonuses have been approved by the BA.
Scheele warns that companies who do not provide training will face difficulty finding skilled workers under difficult conditions after the end of the pandemic. He encourages employers to remain active in training, stressing the importance of investing in the future workforce.
In conclusion, while the coronavirus crisis has undoubtedly impacted the apprenticeship market in Germany, there are still opportunities for young people to start their careers. The BA and the training bonus scheme aim to help bridge the gap between companies and potential trainees, ensuring that Germany continues to have a skilled and capable workforce for the future.
