Dortmund demonstrates support for the LGBTQ+ community by displaying flags during the CSD event

In the heart of Germany, Dortmund is gearing up for a significant display of support and pride for the LGBTQ+ community. This year's Christopher Street Day (CSD) Dortmund, taking place on August 16, 2025, will be held under the motto "Queer, Loud, Proud. Together Against the Right".

The action #DortmundShowsFlag, organised by SLADO, an umbrella organisation for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender associations and initiatives in Dortmund, serves as a symbolic and proactive gesture to demonstrate visibility, support, and pride for the LGBTQ+ community in Dortmund ahead of the major CSD events.

SLADO, in cooperation with the city's coordinating office for LSBTIQ*, will provide flags for this purpose. The action period for #DortmundShowsFlag is from August 8 to 16, 2025. Individuals, companies, and organisations are invited to hoist rainbow flags from August 8 at windows, balconies, or their own masts.

The action is not just about visibility but also about ensuring everyone feels safe, respected, and accepted regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or origin. Klinikum Dortmund, a key participant, is showing solidarity with the queer community and commitment to a democratic, open society.

The CSD Dortmund festival begins at 2 p.m. on Friedensplatz with over 30 stands from the queer community, civil society, and politics. The CSD stage will feature the mayor and top candidates of democratic parties answering questions from the queer community.

The organisers of CSD Dortmund express concern about the democratic discourse about the rights of queer people being in danger of getting out of hand. They state that it is no longer about which missing steps towards equality will be taken when and how quickly, but rather which steps that have already been taken are being reversed.

The #DortmundShowsFlag action aims to affirm local LGBTQ+ pride, build community solidarity, and publicly advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in the critical lead-up to the 2025 Christopher Street Day celebrations that highlight both celebration and continued calls for equality across Germany.

Flag distribution for #DortmundShowsFlag takes place on August 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. and on August 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. at caféplus, Gnadenort 3-5, 44135 Dortmund. Join the movement, show your support, and let Dortmund shine brightly with the colours of the rainbow.
