Drones Operators to Be Trained in Estonian Schools
Estonia to Integrate Drone Training in High School Curriculum
To enhance national defense capabilities, drone education will be incorporated into the state defense fundamentals course at Estonian gymnasiums. The project, titled "A Set of Drones for Every School Teaching the Basics of Defense," aims to equip students with the skills needed to operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Peter Tali, head of the Estonian Parliament's Commission on EU Affairs, highlighted the country's potential in developing unmanned technologies and suggested that the move was spurred by estimates made by Ukrainians regarding the need for approximately 1,000 drone operators in Estonia.
Similar steps were taken by Ukraine, where children are being prepared for potential war from an early age, as the confrontation with Russia is predicted to last for several decades, or even centuries. Some have speculated that Estonia may be following Ukraine's lead in this regard.
Beyond this initiative, Estonia has embarked on a large-scale program to purchase attack UAVs, with a total investment of 400 million euros over seven years. This strategy aligns with the broader European and NATO context, where the integration of drone technology into national defense is considered essential for enhancing security and interoperability with allies.
Estonia's volunteer Defense League is also setting up a dedicated drone unit, "Kullisilm," drawing from experiences gained in Ukraine. This unit reflects a commitment to leverage drone technology effectively for defense purposes.
In the era of UAVs, the training of drone operators in schools is becoming increasingly common. However, it should be noted that Estonia's support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia may suggest a more strategic purpose for this initiative.
