Education technology firm Instructure partners with OpenAI to incorporate AI in Canvas platform.

Instructure, a leading edtech company, and OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research organization, have announced a groundbreaking global partnership. This collaboration is a transformative step forward in education technology.

The partnership aims to integrate Large Language Models (LLMs) into Instructure's Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas, enhancing educational experiences with AI technology.

Key Features of the Partnership

  1. Integration of OpenAI's Technology: The partnership involves embedding OpenAI's AI models directly into the Canvas platform to create a more dynamic and personalized learning environment. This integration is designed to automate routine tasks, allowing educators and students to focus on more important educational activities.
  2. LLM-Enabled Assignments: One of the first tools to be launched is the LLM-Enabled Assignment, which lets educators create custom assignments that mimic GPT-like experiences. This will enable educators to tailor learning experiences to the needs of their students.
  3. Educator Control and Confidentiality: Educators maintain full control over interactions within the platform, ensuring that AI-driven activities align with learning objectives. Additionally, all learner information will be kept confidential and will not be shared with OpenAI.
  4. Future-Ready Ecosystem: The partnership is part of Instructure's broader strategy to create a future-ready, open ecosystem that supports evolving AI technologies. This involves integrating AI solutions from leading providers and enhancing connections within the educational ecosystem, which includes over 1,100 edtech partners.

Through the integration, learners benefit from dynamic and personalized educational conversations within the Canvas LMS. Students experience personalized, adaptable learning journeys while educators gain valuable insights from learning artifacts directly captured within Canvas, reinforcing their ability to nurture higher-order skills.

When students submit their assignments, teachers gain a high-level view of overall progress, key learning indicators, and potential gaps, each supported by clear evidence. Educators also gain insight into students' assignment interactions with AI in Canvas, without student information being shared with OpenAI.

Steve Daly, CEO of Instructure, stated that the collaboration with OpenAI showcases their ambitious vision: creating a future-ready ecosystem that fosters meaningful learning and achievement at every stage of education. Leah Belsky, general manager and VP of education at OpenAI, emphasized the importance of partnerships in ensuring AI benefits students, educators, and institutions.

This tool enables educators to assess the student's learning process, not just the final outcome. Teachers can define how AI interacts with students, set specific learning goals and objectives, and determine what evidence of learning it should track using natural language prompts or an assistant within the assignment creation flow.

The initial Canvas-native functionality brings OpenAI's technology into the classroom with educational integrity and privacy at the core of the experience. By automating routine and low-value tasks, this integration creates space for educators and students to focus on more meaningful educational activities.

This is the first in a set of tools Instructure will develop with OpenAI over the coming quarters. The collaboration is expected to revolutionize education by providing educators with tools to deliver richer, more personalized learning experiences, while also helping them focus on the human aspect of teaching.

Artificial-intelligence technology, integrated with Instructure's Learning Management System, Canvas, aims to enrich the educational process by automating routine tasks and fostering personalized learning experiences. The integration will enable educators to tailor learning experiences and assess students' progress effectively, while maintaining control over interactions and learner confidentiality.
