Essen Approves 'School as a Safe Place' Concept for Enhanced Security
Essen's city council has approved a new concept, 'School as a safe place', aiming to bolster security in the city's schools. The initiative, which began in July, focuses on structural improvements and educational programs to enhance safety and prevent violence.
In the pilot phase, 14 schools will receive lock cylinders on 682 doors, enabling swift and secure locking during emergencies. Additionally, main entrances will sport new signs displaying accurate names and addresses for better emergency service orientation. Two structural-technical measures will be implemented: installing lock cylinders with rotating knobs and enhancing external signage.
The committee for school, education, and science recommended these initial measures, which are part of a broader concept including preventive-educational measures. These may include additional alarm systems or visual barriers, currently under examination. The effectiveness of these measures will be evaluated annually to guide further development.
The theater-pedagogical program 'My body belongs to me' will be funded comprehensively for all third graders at elementary and special needs schools in Essen. Around 21 schools will systematically introduce proven violence prevention programs, with approximately 20 teachers trained per school.
The 'School as a safe place' concept, approved by Essen's city council, focuses on immediate improvements and long-term strategies. With an initial investment of around 406,000 euros for structural-technical measures and 258,600 euros for preventive-educational measures, the city aims to create a secure learning environment. The program's success will be monitored and refined annually.
