Romania's Pro-EU Independent Candidate Nicusor Dan Secures Presidential Victory

In a dramatic turn of events on May 18, Nicusor Dan, the current mayor of Bucharest and a mathematics professor, was elected as Romania's president, according to data from the Permanent Electoral Authority. Dan secured a decisive victory with 53.60% of the vote, defeating George Simion of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) who garnered 46.40% in the second round. Over 11.6 million Romanians cast their votes in the decisive round.

The news of Dan's victory prompted congratulations from leaders across Europe, reflecting the strong pro-European sentiment behind his win. The Moldovan President, Maia Sandu, was among the first to offer her congratulations. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised the victory as a vote for an open and prosperous Romania within a strong Europe.

In a social media message, Maia Sandu expressed confidence that Romania and the Republic of Moldova would move forward together on the European path. European Council President Antonio Costa, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also extended their congratulations.

From the capital city of Kyiv, Zelensky highlighted the importance of Romania as a trusted partner, emphasizing that together, they could strengthen both their countries and Europe. Macron emphasized France’s commitment to working with Romania for a stronger, more sovereign, and more independent Europe.

As the news of Dan's win spread, thousands gathered in central Bucharest and other cities across Romania to celebrate. Traffic on Regina Elisabeta Boulevard was brought to a standstill as supporters celebrated the projected victory.

It is important to note that Dan's political stance is characterized by a strong pro-European Union, pro-NATO, and supportive stance towards Ukraine. His victory signals Romania's intention to continue its pro-Western course, support Ukraine, and strengthen ties with the EU and NATO. However, his political journey is not without challenges. As the election results revealed significant divisions in Romanian society, he faces the challenge of reuniting a fragmented nation and addressing pressing economic issues.
