Brown University Appoints Christina Paxson as President for a Second Term

Brown University has announced that Christina Paxson will return as its 20th president, effective July 1, 2023. Paxson served as the university's president from 2012 to 2021 and will now be the first woman to serve in this role twice.

Paxson, an economist with a focus on health and education policy, holds a PhD in economics from Princeton University. She has written extensively on issues related to education, health, and social policy, and her research has been published in numerous academic journals.

The appointment comes after a comprehensive search process and includes a significant commitment from Brown University. The university has agreed to provide $50 million for student loan assistance in Rhode Island. Furthermore, the university has made a voluntary agreement to preserve the ability for students and scholars to teach and learn without government intrusion.

During her first term as president, Paxson played a key role in the university's growth and development. She oversaw the completion of several major construction projects, including the Stephen Robert '62 Campus Centre and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Before becoming president, Paxson served as the university's provost from 2005 to 2012. During her time as provost, she played a crucial role in the development of the university's strategic plan and the expansion of its academic programmes.
