Riding High with Mother Nature: AWO Waldkindergarten Obertshausen's Unconventional Approach
Forest Kindergarten "Wild Earth Bear" is accommodating Mayor Friedrich.
Mayor Manuel Friedrich took a leap of faith, ditching the office for a day in the great outdoors at the AWO Waldkindergarten on Laakirchner Street. This distinctive daycare center is renowned for its groundbreaking open-sky pedagogy and was the first of its kind in Offenbach's district.
Founded more than two decades ago by a spirited parent initiative, the AWO Waldkindergarten Obertshausen let children roam and play outdoors year-round. According to lead educator Monika Hodak, "The kids get to immerse themselves completely in nature, and have ample time for self-discovery and exploration." With a launch pad at their caravan on Laakirchner Street, the children venture into nearby wooded areas for regular excursions.
Bianca Weinert, the school's pedagogical department head, adds that this environment fosters a unique sense of belonging, not just in the community of the forest group but within each individual and nature as well.
Whittling Knives and Buzzing Bees
Mayor Friedrich tagged along with the educator crew and the children to the woodland play area known as "Lehmplatz." There, he whittled with the children, swung idly in a hammock, and perused a bee book, all while basking in the early summer sun alongside the motley crew. A festive lunch concluded the day at the caravan before the pedagogical journey drew to a close at two.
When it was time to bid adieu, Friedrich expressed his gratitude: "I'd like to thank each and every one of you for this remarkable experience. You've given me a glimpse into this fascinating pedagogical approach."
Journey to Waldstraße
The AWO Waldkindergarten Obertshausen is gearing up for a relocation. In the future, operations will continue on Waldstraße, though a moving date has yet to be announced.
