Former Superintendent Ian Roberts Held in Custody, District Sues Consulting Firm
Former Des Moines Public Schools superintendent Ian Roberts remains in federal custody, arrested for alleged firearm offenses. The district has launched legal action against JG Consulting, alleging the firm breached its obligations by recommending Roberts for the role despite his immigration status.
Roberts, who resigned following his detainment and license revocation, is not in the United States legally and has not had work authorization since 2020. His attorney has filed a motion to halt his removal order. The school board chair, Jackie Norris, stated that Roberts should not have been hired if the board knew about his immigration status.
The consulting firm, JG Consulting, conducted a background check on Roberts before his employment. However, the district's petition alleges that the firm failed to uncover negative information about Roberts, including his immigration status. Portions of Roberts' resume, including his educational history, have since been called into question.
Des Moines Public Schools board has announced its intention to pursue legal action against JG Consulting for failing to properly vet superintendent candidates. Roberts remains in custody, awaiting his immigration court hearing.
