Fresno Fire Department nurtures budding Firefighters in their ranks
Every spring, the Fresno Fire Department opens its doors to a new group of young aspirants, inviting them to join the Explorers program. This programme, which meets biweekly at the Fresno Fire Department station on weekends, has been a launching pad for several young firefighters for decades.
The Explorers program offers a unique opportunity for 40 future heroes aged 15-20 to work alongside on-duty crews and gain first-hand experience. This hands-on, challenging environment has ignited the passion for service in many participants, such as Seth Wedemeyer, who joined the program at 19 years old.
Justin Gibson, another success story of the Explorers program, grew up at the fire station, considering the crew as his family. His childhood was filled with mischief, but the crew didn't mind because of their bond with him. Today, Justin is not only a mentor but also a firefighter, carrying on his father's legacy in the Fresno Fire Department. His father, a Captain at Fresno Fire, instilled in him a desire to become a firefighter from a young age, and Justin grew up on a fire engine.
Wade Kandarian, another former explorer, is now a full-time fireman in his hometown. He spent seven years in the program, and the experiences he gained there have been invaluable. Wade expresses a sense of satisfaction when he recalls helping someone in need, stating, "It's a great feeling when you get to someone potentially on a very bad day, the worst day of their life."
The Fresno Fire Chief's Foundation ensures that anyone, regardless of their economic situation, can participate in the program. Opportunities for scholarships and financial aid are available through the Foundation, making it accessible for all interested young individuals.
Justin Gibson, now a mentor himself, feels the pressure to make his father proud. However, he carries this pressure with grace, inspiring the new generation of explorers. The program has been instrumental in shaping the lives of many young people, providing them with the guidance they need to apply for real firefighter positions upon completion.
In conclusion, the Fresno Fire Department's Explorers program is more than just a training ground for future firefighters. It is a community that fosters growth, encourages passion, and provides opportunities for those who aspire to serve their community.
