From Medical Student to Food Diplomat: A Leap of Faith in the U.S.
A former medical student from the UAE has found success in the U.S. through food diplomacy and storytelling. The journey began with a leap of faith, encouraged by a supportive university advisor, and has since led to a new perspective on life and culture.
Rita Rowand, my university advisor, played a pivotal role in this transformation. She initially helped me transition from studying in the UAE to the United States as an international student. Years later, at the NAFSA Conference in May 2025, I reunited with Rita and reflected on her enduring influence. Her support during my arrival in the U.S. was crucial, helping me adapt and grow into the person I am today.
Initially, I was hesitant to move due to fear of the unknown and established routines in the UAE. However, Rita encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and trust my capabilities, leading me to make the leap. This move allowed me to develop the ability to view the world through multiple lenses, enhancing my connection with diverse people and understanding of various viewpoints.
My career path shifted from medicine to storytelling due to exposure to new opportunities in the U.S. I discovered food diplomacy as a way to build bridges and connect with diverse people through Nigerian cuisine. Now, I promote life-changing opportunities to help others make their own leaps towards possibilities. The collective journey of growth involves family and mentors who see potential in us, as Rita Rowand has demonstrated.
