From Star Trek to Judge Dredd: A Fan's Comic Journey

In 2011, a fan met Sulu, the actor from Star Trek, and got a book signed by Bryan Talbot, the renowned comic artist. The speaker, now 27, has always been drawn to Judge Dredd from 2000AD, which he considers the '1984 for kids' of the 80s.

Growing up amidst the Cold War and the miners' strike, the speaker found Judge Dredd's dark, undemocratic world a stark reflection of societal events. His favourite character, Judge Dredd, was created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra for 2000AD, a comic he considers a staple of his youth alongside Blondie and Star Wars.

In 2002, at the age of 29, the speaker worked on an Italian cruise ship with an international crew of 1000, including only 11 English crew members. Despite the diverse environment, he found common ground with his colleagues through their shared love for comics, particularly those from 2000AD.

The speaker's appreciation for Judge Dredd and 2000AD comics remains undiminished, reflecting his formative years and the societal backdrop of the time. His encounter with Bryan Talbot, the artist behind Nemesis the Warlock, serves as a cherished memory in his comic book journey.
