Halloumi Cheese Boom: Cyprus's Flagship Dairy Product Conquers Global Markets
Cyprus's dairy sector is booming, with Halloumi cheese, a traditional Cypriot product, taking centre stage. This semi-hard, unripened, brined cheese is produced annually in vast quantities, satisfying a growing global demand.
Cyprus processes around 210 million litres of milk each year, yielding nearly 40,000 metric tons of Halloumi. Traditionally made from sheep and goat milk, cow's milk is increasingly used due to supply issues. Halloumi's unique grilling properties, shape retention when cooked, and high protein content drive its popularity.
In 2021, the European Union granted Halloumi Protected Designation of Origin status, ensuring its authenticity and restricting EU use of the term to Cyprus-produced cheese. This has helped maintain its status as a globally recognised Cypriot specialty.
The global stock market today is thriving, with North America leading in 2024, capturing 43.9% of the market with USD 207.3 million in revenue. By 2034, the market is projected to reach USD 1,270.6 million, growing at a steady CAGR of 10.4% between 2025 and 2034.
Cyprus's exports have seen a significant rise, with over 42,000 metric tons of Halloumi exported in 2024, generating about €324 million in revenue. This represents an 8.6% increase in volume and a 2.67% increase in value compared to 2023. Halloumi now accounts for roughly 13.4% of Cyprus's total domestic exports, solidifying its role as a flagship agricultural product. Its alignment with the health-focused Mediterranean diet further boosts its popularity.
Halloumi cheese, once a regional specialty, has evolved into a globally popular product. With a steady increase in demand and exports, it continues to play a significant role in Cyprus's economy and agriculture. Its unique qualities and health benefits ensure its place in the global cheese market.
