In the picturesque town of Otisheim, education mentors are making a significant impact on the lives of families with a migration background. These mentors, who are fluent in both German and their native language, serve as vital connectors between parents and educators, helping to navigate the complexities of the local education system.

The deployment of these education mentors in Otisheim began in early September, driven by the increased need for support. The need has been present for some time but has grown due to an influx of people from EU countries. Silvia Schäfer, the principal of Otisheim's Henri-Arnaud elementary school, reported this increase.

The community has signed a cooperation agreement with the association 'miteinanderleben' for the provision of education mentors. The Otisheim administration and town council have shown great support for this concept, recognising its importance in fostering inclusive education participation.

The role of education mentors is multifaceted. They bridge language and cultural gaps, empowering parents to actively participate in their children's education. This includes assistance with preparation for parent-teacher meetings, explaining educational terms, and helping with paperwork.

By providing this support, education mentors foster a welcoming environment that encourages parental involvement and reduces feelings of alienation. They often serve as trusted liaisons who can advocate for parents’ needs and concerns.

Furthermore, education mentors indirectly support children’s social and academic integration. By helping parents engage more effectively with schools and kindergartens, they facilitate smoother communication and understanding, which in turn benefits the children.

In Otisheim, Sylvia Schwarz-Herbig is responsible for mediating the education mentors through the volunteer agency FRAG Ostlicher Enzkreis. These mentors are making a real difference in the lives of families, ensuring that everyone feels included and supported in the education system.
