India Launches Climate Action Charter to Fight Global Crisis
The Climate Group India Initiative (CII) has launched the Climate Action Charter (CCAC) to aid businesses in combating climate change. This comes amidst a long-standing global concern, with approximately 13 million lives lost annually due to environmental factors. India, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2070, is actively involved in reducing its carbon footprint.
CCAC supports signatories in understanding climate change risks, setting GHG emission reduction targets, transitioning value chains, building resilience, and mobilizing green finance. Despite the charter's launch on 21st September 2022, specific signatory companies remain unclear.
Climate change, driven by factors like power generation, manufacturing, and energy demand, causes severe environmental harm, including increased storms and droughts. India, co-leading the Road Transport breakthrough with the US and UK and joining the Clean Energy Ministerial Industrial Deep Decarbonisation Initiative, is committed to reducing its emissions. The country targets 50% renewable electricity by 2030, with industry action being crucial for a net-zero future.
The burning of fossil fuels, responsible for over 75% of greenhouse emissions and nearly 90% of carbon emissions, is the primary driver of climate change. The CCAC, along with government initiatives, aims to support businesses in transitioning to a low-carbon economy, fostering resilience, innovation, and growth.
