The 4th Universia International Rectors' Summit, held in Salamanca, Spain on 21 and 22 May 2018, marked another significant gathering of university leaders from 26 countries. This follows the 3rd Summit, which took place in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on 28 and 29 July 2014, and the 2nd Summit in Guadalajara, Mexico on 31 May and 1 June 2010. The first Summit was held in Sevilla, Spain on 19 and 20 May 2005, but information about the 1st and 2nd Summits was not provided in the text. The 5th International Rectors Summit also took place, but the location was not specified.

At the 2014 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the key discussion points primarily centered on themes of organization, governance, and financing of higher education institutions. This included debates and presentations related to effective management and funding strategies within universities, with a focus on adapting to evolving academic and administrative challenges.

Additional context can be inferred from participants like Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo, who engaged in discussions about university education concepts, particularly regarding engineering education, new teaching methods, digital transformation in academia, and policies in higher education governance and quality assurance in connection to processes like the Bologna Process. This suggests the summit also addressed pedagogical innovation and policy frameworks in international higher education.

The 2nd Summit in Guadalajara focused on the construction of a new Ibero-American university model, the creation of a common Ibero-American space in a globalised world, the university as a factor for economic and social development, and the university-company relationship for promoting innovation. The 1st Summit in Sevilla and the 5th Summit in Valencia, Spain, also addressed the future of universities, their ability to respond to the needs, and the role of Brazil in an international context, as well as the main challenges facing universities in relation to the digital world, university research, and the contribution of universities to social and territorial development.

The 3rd Summit in Rio de Janeiro saw more than 1,100 rectors from 33 countries participate, while the 2nd Summit in Guadalajara had over 1,000 university rectors from various countries. The 4th Summit in Salamanca had more than 700 university leaders from 26 countries, and the 5th Summit had nearly 700 university leaders from 14 countries.

These gatherings provide a platform for university leaders to discuss and address the social commitment of universities in Ibero-America and the main challenges they face in fulfilling their missions. They also offer an opportunity to reflect on the future of universities and their role in an increasingly digital and globalised world.

During the 2014 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, discussions on education-and-self-development themes surfaced, specifically focusing on new teaching methods, digital transformation in academia, and policies in higher education governance, presenting an avenue for pedagogical innovation. At the 5th International Rectors Summit, university leaders explored the future of universities and their ability to adapt to an evolving educational landscape, furthering the discourse on education-and-self-development.
