- John affirmatively acknowledges his character as Dumbledore
Get ready, Potterheads! It seems like the cat's out of the bag when it comes to Dumbledore in the upcoming "Harry Potter" series. Veteran actor John Lithgow (79) has confirmed he'll take on the role of the esteemed headmaster, much to the excitement of fans. The offer came as a surprise during the Sundance Film Festival, but Lithgow, known for his stint on "Third Rock from the Sun," wasn't so sure about the commitment.
"It wasn't an easy decision," Lithgow admitted. "I fear it will define the final chapter of my life. But I'm very excited. Some wonderful people are focusing their attention on Harry Potter again," he said, hinting at the massive 10-year project being planned by HBO and Warner Bros. Television. The series aims to retell J.K. Rowling's entire book series, and Lithgow was concerned about the project potentially lasting until his 87th birthday. However, he ultimately said yes, and HBO has remained tight-lipped about the details until contracts are finalized.
Meanwhile, there's been plenty of chatter about other potential cast members. "Oppenheimer" star Cillian Murphy is reportedly in talks to play Lord Voldemort, a role that initially sparked excitement among fans. But recent reports suggest Murphy will play a different villain, possibly Professor Quirinus Quirrell. Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed Voldemort in the original "Harry Potter" films, expressed his approval of Murphy as the Dark Lord, "Cillian is a fantastic actor. That's a wonderful suggestion. I'd be fully for Cillian. Yes,” he said.
As for Severus Snape, "I May Destroy You" star Paapa Essiedu is rumored to be under consideration. If he lands the role, it would mark a significant milestone for the franchise, as it could involve race-swapping a beloved character. But, like the rest of these casting rumors, no official confirmation has been made by HBO. So, Potterheads, keep your Magnifescores at the ready, as we wait on more news from the wizarding world!
