Kerala High Court Appoints Observer for Transparent Sabarimala Melsanthi Selection
The Kerala High Court has appointed retired judge Justice TR Ramachandran Nair as an observer to oversee the selection process of Melsanthis (chief priests) at Sabarimala temples for the year 1201 ME (2025-2026). The observer will monitor the selection at Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple and Malikappuram Temple, ensuring transparency in the process.
The selection process involves shortlisting candidates after interviews, followed by a final selection through a draw of lots in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Justice Nair will be present at the Travancore Devaswom Board Head Office in Thiruvananthapuram and in Sabarimala during the draw of lots. The Court has directed that marks must be entered with ballpoint pens and countersigned by the observer, then kept under the custody of the Devaswom Commissioner. All proceedings will be videographed, and materials will be produced before the Court along with a report from the observer in a sealed cover by October 13, 2025.
The suo motu case was initiated based on the Sabarimala Special Commissioner's report to ensure transparency in the chief priest selection process. The Pandalam Royal family must send a young boy and girl to draw lots for the Sabarimala and Malikappuram temples, respectively, as per custom. The Travancore Devaswom Board is directed to arrange necessary conveyance and accommodation for the observer.
The appointment of Justice TR Ramachandran Nair as an observer aims to ensure a fair and transparent selection process for the Melsanthis at Sabarimala temples. His presence will help maintain the integrity of the process, fostering trust among devotees and stakeholders.
