In the heart of Alexandria, a non-profit organisation named Code Rising has been making a significant impact in the lives of underprivileged students. Founded two years ago by Michelle Millben, Code Rising has been dedicated to providing opportunities for students who may be underestimated or excluded from STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) opportunities in the city.

This year, Code Rising launched a high school pre-apprenticeship program in collaboration with Casa Chirilagua, Space of Her Own (SOHO), and a host of other partners including Amazon, Dominion Energy, ACT for Alexandria, Spring2ACTion, City of Alexandria, Titan Robotics, Grace Episcopal Church, Continues Arcade, Cafe Pizzaolio, and the community.

The second annual summer camp, which concluded this month, provided an introduction to STEAM education for elementary, middle, and high school students. Each day, students learned at three locations, immersing themselves in coding, creating short movies, and designing video games.

The summer camp also offered professional development coaching, resume-building support, and mentorship. The end of the camp saw the distribution of brand new computers to participating students. High school students received MacBooks, while their elementary and middle school counterparts received Chromebooks.

In a heartening gesture, each participant from the collaborating organisations also received a $1,125 scholarship. The summer camp included weekly field trips, one of which was to Continues Arcade in Old Town.

Code Rising's mission extends beyond the summer months. The Fall program is set to start next month, with students participating after school and on weekends. The organisation seeks to equip students with the skills, tools, and confidence to thrive in college and in high-wage, high-growth careers.

With its successful summer camp concluding, Code Rising continues to make strides in providing underprivileged kids with the opportunity to learn about STEAM and set them on a path towards a brighter future.
