Park University Shines in Academics and Sports
Park University has once again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence and athletic prowess. A total of 61 student-athletes from the institution earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, a testament to their dedication in balancing their academic and athletic pursuits.
Four of these scholar-athletes competed in the NAIA Cross Country National Championship held in Columbia, Missouri, on November 22. Lily Brecheisen, a freshman from the Parkville Campus, placed 267th in the women's 6,000 meter race, while Lukas Mehl, a sophomore from the same campus, placed 134th in the men's 8,000 meter race. Cayden Walker, another freshman from the Parkville Campus, also participated, finishing 148th in the men's 8,000 meter race. The exact position of Maryan Sharif, a senior from the Gilbert Campus, in the women's 6,000 meter race is not currently available.
The Parkville Campus women's soccer and Gilbert Campus women's soccer team added nine each to their rosters. The Parkville Campus women's volleyball program led Park's teams with 10 individuals being recognized.
In a separate event, Noah Yalu, a freshman from the Parkville Campus, was selected as the GSAC Freshman of the Year in men's soccer. Zackery Fritz, also from the Parkville Campus, was named the HAAC Esports League of Legends Player of the Year for the second straight season.
The Park University community is not just excelling in sports. Matt Harris, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, has been a regular voice in local media, providing insights on various political issues. He was interviewed for stories published in the Kansas City Star and aired on KMBZ-FM and KCTV, discussing topics such as the results of the presidential election, Missouri's Amendment 2, and the seismic shift in a key KC-area Senate district.
Ali Mammadov, a graduate certificate student in piano performance in Park University's International Center for Music, and strings students from the same centre, performed live on Kansas Public Radio's "Classical Music in the Morning" program. Theresa Garza, MPA '14, also represented Park University well, participating in a panel discussion for the Kansas City Business Journal's 25th anniversary of "Women Who Mean Business" (now known as "Women of Influence").
Lastly, Jack MacLennan, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, was appointed to the St. Thomas University Alumni Association Board of Directors.
These achievements highlight the diverse talents and accomplishments of the Park University community, showcasing their dedication to academic, artistic, and athletic excellence.
