Majority of Generation Z Individuals View Marriage and Childbearing as Non-Essential Components for a Fulfilling Life, According to a Survey
In a recent survey conducted by NBC, Gen-Z respondents expressed economic anxieties as the primary reason for their hesitancy towards family life. This trend, according to a Forbes analysis, could lead to increased burnout and mental health issues due to the delay of major life events, such as marriage and starting a family, in favour of career demands and financial pressures.
The poll results revealed a significant disparity in values between Trump voters and Harris voters. Among Trump-voting men, having children was the most popular response for what constitutes personal success, but only 34% identified it as such. In contrast, only 9% of men who voted for Harris and 6% of women who voted for Harris considered having children important to their personal definition of success.
Among Trump-voting women, having children came in sixth, at 26%, while getting married came in even lower, at just 20%. This suggests a shift in priorities, with some conservative young women focusing on career and financial stability first, believing children will naturally follow.
Conservative women are pushing back against voices on the right that shame women for doing anything outside the home. The lives of some conservative women, such as Sen. Katie Britt, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, show that faith, family, and career can coexist.
The poll, which surveyed 2,970 adults aged 18-29, has sparked a mainstream discussion centring on the glaring differences in priorities between Trump voters and Harris voters. The party committee that won the most younger women who consider themselves conservative in the latest elections is not explicitly detailed in the search results. However, the party with the lowest proportion of women overall, including younger women, is the AfD with about 11.8% women members, while the CDU/CSU has a moderate women share around 22-25%. This suggests no clear dominance by conservative parties in attracting younger conservative women compared to other parties like Bündnis 90/Die Grünen with over 61% women.
Education could play a role in the poll results, as Trump-voting men are more likely to be blue-collar and insulated from anti-family rhetoric that saturates universities. The poll asked respondents about their personal definition of success, and the response that generated the most attention was "having children."
Interestingly, getting married and having children is linked to financial abundance, as a husband and wife share costs, divide responsibilities, and build stability together. However, many Gen-Zers are delaying having families due to the housing affordability crisis.
Emily Zanotti observes that most working wives and moms are not "girlbossing" but deliberately balancing work and family in ways that put children first. The Forbes analysis revealed that employees who delay two or more life milestones are four times more likely to report burnout and six times more likely to say their jobs have harmed their mental health.
In conclusion, the future belongs to those who raise the next generation with love, discipline, and faith. The poll results underscore the need for open discussions about the challenges and opportunities that come with balancing career, family, and financial stability in today's world.
