Mississippi family calls for investigation after discovering their Black adolescent member suspended from a tree
In a shocking turn of events, a 21-year-old Black student named Demartravion 'Trey' Reed was found hanging from a tree on the campus of Delta State University on Monday. The news has sparked calls for justice and online speculation, but authorities have stated there is no evidence of foul play.
Trey Reed's family, represented by attorneys, has called for an independent investigation into the circumstances before his death. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, retained by the family, has echoed this call, stating that Reed was a young man full of promise and warmth, deeply loved and respected by all who knew him.
The Bolivar County Coroner, Randolph Seals Jr., is conducting a thorough investigation into Reed's death. Preliminary examinations showed no evidence of a physical attack on Reed, but more details will be released after the Mississippi State Crime Lab conducts an autopsy.
The death of Trey Reed has raised concerns among students and the community. Meara Brown, who visited Delta State to see her sister, expressed feelings of shock and concern. Jy'quon Wallace, the president of Delta State University's African American Student Council, is planning a vigil for Reed. Wallace acknowledged that some classmates are frustrated with the limited information released about Reed's death and expressed concern for Reed's family and other students who knew him on campus.
Mtume Mathews, vice president of the African American Student Council, echoed Wallace's sentiments, expressing a desire for answers. Vanessa Jones, another attorney retained by Reed's family, is launching an independent investigation, demanding transparency from officials.
Some families of other Black men who have been found hanging in Mississippi and were determined to have died by suicide are questioning the official causes of death. Meara Brown suggested that officials should cooperate with Reed's family and release the autopsy results to address rumours.
Kolby Horace, a senior at Delta State, expressed confusion and a desire for justice and truth regarding Reed's death. Mtume Mathews and Jy'quon Wallace are discussing organizing a vigil for Reed, hoping to provide a space for the campus community to grieve and seek answers together.
As the investigation continues, the campus community and the family of Trey Reed await answers and justice.
