Musicians from an orchestra donning innovative attire, dubbed the "Sound-Body Dress"
In an exciting interdisciplinary cooperation project, 13 students from the 6th semester of the fashion design faculty at Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences have developed functional clothing for the female musicians of the Baden Philharmonic Pforzheim. The project, which places great value on practical relevance in the fashion studies program, showcases the enriching nature of collaboration between different disciplines.
The project's aim is to provide elegance, high functionality, and material quality for musicians, ensuring they can perform comfortably and stylishly. For flutist Julie Olbert, freedom of movement in the upper body is crucial due to her profession. She has experienced tearing seams on the upper arms due to her movements on stage.
Unlike the tuxedo for male musicians, there is no standard for women's concert attire. This project offers an opportunity to address this gap and create a uniform appearance for the orchestra. The six concepts, which will be implemented in the next three weeks, were designed to cater to each musician's unique requirements. Each student worked with one musician, ensuring that the designs met their individual needs.
The designs have been presented to the management of the Pforzheim Theater and the musicians themselves. For Markus Huber, the General Music Director of Pforzheim, wearing silk stockings in the spotlight at high temperatures can be a strain. He hopes that the new clothing will address these issues and enhance the musicians' comfort during performances.
Professor Johann Stockhammer, head of the fashion studies program, praises the project as successfully implemented with real practical relevance. Fashion professor Claudia Throm found the project complex yet enriching, with the students balancing functionality, individual musician needs, and their own design aspirations.
Almut Benkert, head of the creative economy department of the economic and city marketing of Pforzheim, finds the cooperation project a wonderful idea. The jury's decision will be announced at the concert on Saturday, February 10, 2018, awarding three designs. The first winning design has the potential to be implemented for all musicians in the future.
The concert, which serves as the exhibition for these innovative designs, will also be the venue for the jury's decision announcement. The event promises to be an exciting fusion of music and fashion, showcasing the results of this unique interdisciplinary project.
