Fabrice Boudjaaba Appointed as Director of CNRS Humanities & Social Sciences

Fabrice Boudjaaba, an esteemed scholar with a rich academic background, has been appointed as the Director of CNRS Humanities & Social Sciences, effective September 1, 2025. Boudjaaba has been serving as the Deputy Director of the same division since 2021.

Boudjaaba joined CNRS in 2006, and since then, he has been a significant contributor to the fields of theoretical and applied mechanics, materials science, nonlinear dynamics, and history. He holds an agréégation and a PhD in early modern and modern history.

Throughout his career, Boudjaaba has published two individual books, edited or co-edited ten others, and written nearly fifty articles and book chapters. His research primarily focuses on the evolution of family systems and the role of the family in social mobility and economic transformations. Topics covered in his research include real estate markets, individual and family migrations, and population establishment in territories.

Boudjaaba's research emphasizes quantitative and serial approaches. In his new role, he will continue to apply these methods to further the understanding of humanities and social sciences.

In addition to his research, Boudjaaba has served as the editor-in-chief of Annales de Démographie Historique since 2018. He was also in charge of interdisciplinarity and research infrastructure in the humanities and social sciences. Prior to this, he served as Deputy Scientific Director for CNRS Humanities & Social Sciences from 2016 to 2021.

Boudjaaba is succeeding Marie Gaille in his new role. It's worth noting that the CNRS/École des Hautes Études en Sciences sociales was not previously mentioned in the bullet points.

In his previous role as Deputy Director, Boudjaaba was responsible for monitoring laboratories within the Early Modern and Modern Section (section 35, ex-33). He has shown a commitment to fostering academic growth and excellence, and his appointment as Director is expected to continue this trend.

As Boudjaaba prepares to take on his new role, he will no doubt continue to make significant contributions to the field of humanities and social sciences. His dedication, expertise, and innovative research methods make him an ideal choice for this position.
