Nigel Evans' Journey: From Military Footwear to Arabic Literature
Rising Brown Senior Nigel Evans Pursues Language Skills and Personal Growth
Nigel Evans, a rising senior at Brown University, is spending his summer immersed in language and self-discovery. The ambitious student is participating in the U.S. State Department's Critical Language Scholar program to learn Arabic, and he is also enrolled in a remote summer session of Happiness and the Pursuit of a Good Life at Brown.
Evans' military service sparked a curiosity about human behavior and decision-making, and this curiosity continues to drive him. He hopes to join Happiness and the Pursuit of a Good Life as a teaching assistant in the coming year.
Evans' passion for international affairs and geopolitics led him to join the Brown Meditation Community and attend a contemplative studies course at the university. This past spring, he even participated in his first meditation retreat with the Brown Meditation Community, entirely in silence.
In addition to Arabic, Evans plans to enroll in French courses at Brown's Center for Language Studies in the fall. He is also considering participating in Brown's language tables for both Arabic and French.
Evans is set to graduate as a '.5er' in December 2026. He has expressed gratitude for Brown University, stating it is the best place for his undergraduate studies. He attributes his exploration opportunities to Brown University's Open Curriculum.
As Evans looks towards the future, he is considering graduate studies overseas, consulting work, or joining the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer. He aims to travel extensively and work internationally in a role that utilizes his language skills and bridges cultures.
Despite not currently attending any university, Evans remains hopeful about finding his niche at Brown University. Many students have found Happiness and the Pursuit of a Good Life to be fascinating, and Evans is no exception. He is optimistic about his future and attributes his exploration opportunities to Brown University's Open Curriculum.
