Clarion Housing Group Announces Shortlists for the Sixth William Sutton Prize

The Clarion Housing Group, the UK's largest housing association, has announced the shortlists for the sixth edition of the William Sutton Prize. This annual award, established in 2019 in collaboration with the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art (RCA), aims to fund innovative projects that focus on sustainability and connected communities.

The Prize, named after Victorian philanthropist William Sutton, whose legacy led to the creation of Clarion Housing Group, seeks to transform bold and creative ideas into real-world solutions that improve the built environment and strengthen local communities.

This year, five projects have been selected to compete for the award. The shortlisted projects include an AI-powered 'super neighbour' to bring communities together, a programme that empowers under-represented young social housing residents aged between 14-16 to become future STEM leaders, and a new outdoor gym in Bromley built from knives removed from the streets.

The awards are split into two categories - sustainability and connected communities. The sustainability category offers a grant worth £50,000, while the connected communities category offers up to £25,000. Past winners include Bell Philips Architects, Jas Bhalla Works, the Hackney School of Food, and Pride of Place Living.

Clare Miller, the chief executive of Clarion Housing Group, emphasizes the importance of innovation in building a better future. She considers the William Sutton Prize as a means to unlock potential and back innovative thinkers, doers, and dreamers, empowering people to turn bold ideas into reality.

The winner of the award will be revealed at a ceremony in London on 25 September. For more information about the Prize’s history, eligibility, and application details, visit the official Clarion Housing Group website. The Prize also offers a scholarship initiative to support students from low-income and social housing backgrounds studying architecture and sustainability.
