NYC's Cultural Institutions Group Welcomes Five New Members After Five-Year Hiatus
New York City's Cultural Institutions Group (CIG) has welcomed five new cultural nonprofits to its membership, marking the first expansion in over five years. The new members, chosen after a thorough analysis, bring the breaking news to 39 and represent each of the city's five boroughs.
The latest additions to CIG are the Bronx Children's Museum, the Louis Armstrong House Museum, the Noble Maritime Collection, Pregones / Puerto Rican Traveling Theater (PRTT), and BRIC. Each institution previously received annual support and an energy subsidy from the Cultural Development Fund in the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA).
The new members offer a diverse range of cultural experiences. BRIC, a Brooklyn-based arts space, is recognized for its exhibition program and supports artists through the Colene Brown Art Prize and ArtFP. PRTT, established in 1967, is considered one of the country's first bilingual theaters. The Louis Armstrong House Museum, the most recently established among the new members, opened its doors in 2023.
The expansion of CIG's membership was first promised by Mayor Eric Adams in his State of the City address in January. The five new institutions join the group after a rigorous analysis of their operations and visitorship, demonstrating the city's commitment to supporting and promoting diverse cultural experiences across all boroughs.
