Online driver's test now available for new drivers
Starting from June, all Victorian drivers can now take their learner test online, marking a significant shift in the licensing process towards digital convenience and accessibility.
The Online Learning and Testing Process
The new digital testing program offers an online course and test that can be completed at home. Prospective learners can access official learner resources, prepare with practice tests, and complete the test through approved platforms.
To access the online test, customers must create a myVicRoads personal account, pay a small fee, and have access to a compatible device. The online course covers both road safety and safe driving behavior, taking between 4 to 6 hours to complete. Learners have 12 months from registration to sit the actual test.
Incorrect answers during the course provide immediate feedback with the correct answer, helping learners to better understand the material. Parents or supervising drivers are encouraged to assist during the course to reinforce road safety and safe driving behavior.
Improving Driver Safety and Access for Regional Areas
This online system enhances road safety through better knowledge acquisition. Early learning through accessible digital platforms helps prepare candidates well before they take practical driving lessons, reducing risky behavior on roads.
Moreover, online tests remove the need for learners to travel long distances to service centers, making learner testing more convenient and accessible. It addresses geographical barriers by allowing learners in remote or rural locations to undertake licensing requirements from home or nearby facilities using digital platforms like myVicRoads.
In-Person Verification
After successfully completing the online test, learner drivers must go to a VicRoads customer service centre in person to confirm their identity, have their photo taken, and have an eyesight check. Those who want to sit the test in person or who need an interpreter will still attend a VicRoads customer service centre.
The current paper tests are expected to be eventually replaced by online testing, further simplifying the licensing process and providing greater access to prospective learners who face barriers such as transport, distance to VicRoads centers, and limited appointment times for sit-down tests.
- The new online learning process provides access to an official course and test, allowing individuals to prepare for their learner test at home, promoting education and self-development in the realm of online education.
- By offering online testing, this digital system not only improves road safety through enhanced knowledge acquisition but also increasing accessibility, as it removes the need for lengthy travel to service centers, benefitting learners in regional and rural areas.
