Online Learning Revolution: Embracing Creativity in Virtual Classrooms
In the wake of the global pandemic, educational institutions are adapting and evolving to meet the demands of modern learning. One such institution, yet unspecified, is transitioning towards a hybrid model of education, combining on-campus and online teaching.
On May 18, 2021, Dr. Jitin Chadha, Director of this institution in New Delhi, participated in a 'Essential Education' webinar hosted by Supreeth Nagaraju. The webinar, organised by Adobe, addressed the challenges faced by students, teachers, and educational institutions during the past year.
The hybrid model, according to Dr. Chadha, is not about offline or online learning, but rather a flexible approach that can switch between both as needed. He emphasised that this model allows for the teaching and learning requirements of students to be met effectively.
The pandemic has presented an opportunity for educational institutions to upskill themselves and adapt to new teaching methods. Recognising this, Dr. Chadha's institution has been actively working to upskill itself, a process that would normally take five years, but has been accelerated to cover the last nine months.
To achieve this, the institution has leveraged Kingston University's training development tool to upskill its faculty. Moreover, they have cooperated with the Hessian State Office for Technology Training (Hessische Landesstelle für Technologiefortbildung, HLFT) to improve teacher training during the pandemic. The HLFT played a key role in professionalising digital competencies and supported teacher development, including through events like a large symposium organised with the IHK Frankfurt.
The way forward, as discussed in the webinar, emphasises the use of technology in education, particularly in a hybrid learning environment. Dr. Chadha spoke about how online teaching requires a change in mindset and academic delivery. He stressed the importance of adapting faculty to use technology effectively for online teaching.
The pandemic has also necessitated the creation of a more robust educational environment to better handle crisis situations. Dr. Chadha discussed how his institution's view of education going forward is not just about survival, but about thriving in the face of adversity.
The panel for the 'Essential Education' webinar featured esteemed educational leaders such as Anant Chakradeo (VC of MIT ADT University, Maharashtra), Hrridaysh Deshpande (VC of Ajeenkya- D Y Patil University, Maharashtra), Sabu Thomas (VC, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala), Malini V Shankar (VC of Indian Maritime University, Tamil Nadu), and Dr. Jitin Chadha himself.
In conclusion, the pandemic has served as a catalyst for educational institutions to upskill themselves and address a wider audience beyond their campus. The hybrid model, while challenging, offers a promising solution for meeting the diverse needs of students in a post-pandemic world.
