OpenAI Expands in India with Affordable ChatGPT Plan and $500B AI Infrastructure Push
OpenAI is expanding its presence in India. The company recently introduced its most affordable ChatGPT subscription plan in the country, which is now its second-largest market. OpenAI is also set to establish its first office in New Delhi later this year.
OpenAI's growth in India is evident in its user base and upcoming investments. The company is currently seeking local partners for a significant data centre project, which could be announced during CEO Sam Altman's upcoming visit. This project, part of the Stargate initiative, aims to build a 1GW-capacity data centre in India. While no specific local partner has been identified for this project, Oracle and G42, an AI firm backed by Abu Dhabi, are working on a 1GW data centre elsewhere through the Stargate venture.
The Stargate project plans to invest up to $500bn in AI infrastructure both in the US and overseas. The data centre project in India would be a substantial step forward in developing AI infrastructure in the region. Meanwhile, the Indian government has implemented a 50% tariff on certain exports to the US, which may impact the tech industry. Despite this, computer software and hardware remain attractive to foreign direct investment (FDI) in India.
OpenAI's expansion in India, with affordable ChatGPT plans and significant infrastructure investments, signals the country's growing importance in the global AI landscape. The upcoming data centre project, part of the Stargate initiative, is expected to boost AI infrastructure in the region. Despite recent trade tariffs, India continues to draw FDI in the tech sector.
