In the annals of the University of Rochester's Department of Medicine, Paul Levy, M.D., stands as a towering figure. His tenure, marked by significant growth and regional expansion, has left an indelible impact on the institution.

Levy's journey began in Columbus, Ohio, where he embarked on his medical education and career, becoming the first in his family to venture into the medical field. After completing his M.D. from Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1982, Levy's path led him to the University of Rochester for his residency, drawn by the educational focus of the program under the leadership of William Morgan, M.D.

Levy's professional ascent was swift. He started as a research technician and rose through the ranks to become the chair of the department of Medicine. His appointment as interim chair in 2009 was followed by a permanent appointment the following year. Under his leadership, the department experienced significant growth and expansion, transitioning to electronic medical records and developing regional programs.

Levy's dedication to mentorship was evident throughout his career. He was mentored by Albert LoBuglio, M.D., during his time in a HemOnc lab at Ohio State, and he remains grateful to the many mentors he has had throughout his career at the medical center.

In 2010, Ruth O'Regan was named as Levy's successor as chair of the department of Medicine. On his last day, Levy left a desk drawer full of buckeyes for O'Regan, a nod to his Ohio State Buckeyes passion.

Levy's family has been a constant source of support and love. He is married to Robin, whom he met in high school and started dating during medical school. They have four children, one of whom is a teacher in the Buffalo area, providing interventions for children with special educational needs. remarkably, three of Levy's children followed him into the medical field.

Outside of medicine, Levy has a rich personal life. He is a passionate bread baker, a tradition he passed on to his children. His culinary preferences are diverse, with a fondness for Southeast Asian cuisine and spicy food. Levy also enjoys feasts with his family, often cooking smoked salmon, ribs, and beef brisket.

In recognition of his contributions, Levy created an endowment to support the Department's academic missions through an annual pilot grant program. The Levy family also owns a cottage in the Finger Lakes, specifically on Keuka Lake, providing a serene retreat from the demands of medicine.

As Levy steps away from his role as chair, his legacy remains a beacon of inspiration and a testament to the transformative power of leadership in medicine. His dedication, mentorship, and passion for his craft will continue to resonate in the halls of the University of Rochester's Department of Medicine for years to come.
