Polish Archaeological Enthusiasts Discover Exceptionally Tough Duo-Wielded Medieval Weapon from the Past
Among a group of enthusiastic treasure hunters venturing through Poland, they stumble upon something extraordinary. Their metal detectors, which had previously uncovered intriguing 13th-century Carolingian dynasty coins, revealed an even more formidable find: a substantial medieval-era sword and a pair of axes, all buried in the Nowomiejskie district.
This incredible discovery was made by members of GRYF–Biskupieckie Stowarzyszenie Detektorystyczne, a group of history enthusiasts and avid treasure seekers, as showcased on their Facebook page. The club is known for its engaging activities, such as the upcoming hunt for Napoleonic-era treasures. Their community efforts don't stop there; they worked together to clean up a forgotten Jewish cemetery in the Lubawa woods back in November.
The New Year's Day dig was collaborative with the Ostroda Museum, which will eventually display these historical relics as part of its permanent exhibition. Proper preservation is crucial, so the museum has already begun the process of securing these weapons, including conducting X-rays for further analysis.
The sword, nearly 3.2 feet long (1 meter), showcased significant rust and weathering from the centuries, but it remained well-preserved, including its intact blade, pommel, and handle. The axes, although less complete, were in relatively good condition as well.
While the museum shares minimal information on the sword and axes' origins, it is known that they are of Medieval origin. Dating back to the 5th to 15th century, the Middle Ages is a lengthy period, but these artifacts should fall within this timeframe. Germany and France experienced the popularity of "hand-and-a-half" weapons, designed for combat against armor, during the Late Middle Ages. The discovery of these weapons near the Osa River may contribute to their exceptional preservation; the river's waters may have protected these relics for centuries.
