Pondering Over the Purpose of Life, With Wealth Accumulation as a Key Consideration

In the pursuit of a successful life, the impact of material success standards on individual happiness and societal well-being is a topic worth exploring. Recent research suggests that materialistic attitudes and an excessive emphasis on possessions and wealth do not lead to lasting increases in happiness or well-being, nor do they support sustainable consumption essential for planetary health [1].

According to Baha'i teachings, success is redefined to prioritize spiritual qualities and relationships over material accumulation. Instead of wealth or possessions, success is measured by the development of virtues, meaningful social connections, purposeful living, and contributions to the welfare of others [2]. This shift in perspective aligns with the idea that fulfillment is found in relationships, social connection, community involvement, and a sense of living a purposeful and meaningful life, rather than material excess [1].

The Baha'i teachings encourage cultivating awareness of one's spiritual nature and responsibilities, transcending the obsession with materialism, and embracing voluntary simplicity as a powerful counter-narrative that values “enough over excess” and “meaning over materialism” [1][2]. This spiritual framework promotes balance, sustainability, and a more profound sense of happiness and societal well-being rooted in collective progress and ethical living.

As a young adult, I find myself caught in the web of societal expectations, desiring to contribute to my community and better the world. However, I am often drawn towards wealth and fame. I struggle with attachment to material outcomes, just like many others, and believe that change is a process and a journey. I invite you, the reader, to prioritise service and your spiritual lives, and join me in this journey.

In today's world, success is often measured by wealth, social media followers, and fame. However, the Baha'i teachings state that serving humanity is one of the main reasons for human existence. Abdu'l-Baha's book "The Secret of Divine Civilization" contains a powerful passage defining the reasons for human creation [4].

Pursuing material possessions and fame can lead to temporary happiness, but are neither reliable nor stable. True, lasting happiness is spiritually attained and exists beyond this world. Happiness consists of two kinds: physical and spiritual. Spiritual happiness is eternal and unfathomable, and is attained through spiritual activities such as prayer, service, and striving to enhance one's spiritual qualities [3].

Wealth is praiseworthy if it is acquired by an individual's own efforts and the grace of God, and if it is expended for philanthropic purposes. Sudden loss of fame or wealth can drive people to despair, self-loathing, addiction, and other negative consequences. Baha'is believe that individuals are considered successful if they spend their days fulfilling their purpose by trying to serve human society in any way they can [5].

The focus on these measures of success has detrimental impacts on society, particularly on youth and the next generation. I encourage you to consider your purpose for being on this planet in light of this teaching. Let us strive to cultivate a deeper understanding of our spiritual nature and responsibilities, and work towards a world that prioritizes spiritual well-being over material success.

Engaging in personal-finance management and wealth-management practices can serve as tools for fostering financial security, but should not become an all-consuming focus that overshadows personal-growth and education-and-self-development. Instead, aligning our actions with Baha'i teachings, we can aspire to prioritize spiritual qualities, meaningful relationships, and service to others as key measures of success.

Drawing inspiration from Baha'i beliefs, we can actively seek to cultivate a holistic understanding of happiness – one that transcends the pursuit of wealth and fame, moving towards a deeper sense of spiritual attainment and fulfillment through prayer, service, and the enhancement of our spiritual qualities.
