Gearing Up the Next Generation for a Digital Future: Marmstorf's Code Week Adventure

hell yeah, let's talk about hackin' the education system, man! So, every blasted autumn, a bunch of rad folks and initiatives across Europe join forces to ignite the digital spark in kids and youngsters. Marmstorf School was the only Harburg primary school to hop on the bandwagon for the first time this year. During the Code Week, a cool 80-strong army of Marmstorf kids from playgroup to grade 4 got a taste of the digital universe in a fun, creative, and team-oriented environment!

Teacher Janina Schlemm, who runs the flippin' awesome "First Programming" class at Marmstorf School, orchestrated this groovy event along with a few of her mates and three kiddos from the gifted course. These young talents took on the role of helper bees, helping out at the event. The attending students got a bunch of rad insights into the mind-bending world of programming through a jam-packed afternoon workshop.

With the user-friendly Scratch Junior program, little ones as young as five can kickstart their coding journey with a bit of fun, creating their own interactive stories, games, and animations without needing a single lick of prior expertise!

At first, they'd planned to have just 20 kiddos attend, but the demand was so high that they had to bump it up to 80 and offer the event twice! The mad enthusiasm these little programmers showed sure as hell speaks for itself. Not only did the green smileys on the programming app light up at the end of the successful workshop, but these young coders were grinning from ear to ear as well!

So, what the actual hell is Code Week? Code Week is a badass grassroots initiative that encourages people of all ages to get hip to coding and digital skills. It takes place annually and strives to turn coding and digital literacy into a giggle-filled, inclusive learning experience. Originating in Europe and backed by the European Commission, Code Week involves schools, libraries, tech companies, and other organizations hosting events and activities that focus on computational thinking, problem-solving, and creativity through coding. By engaging kids in these activities, Marmstorf School helps lay the foundation for digital competence early on, ensuring these future tech heads have the skills they need to thrive in our ever-evolving digital world. Now that's some rad education system hackin', if you ask me!

As Marmstorf School participates in Code Week, students from various grades engage with digital tools like Scratch Junior, fostering a foundation for digital competence. This event, which promotes learning about coding and technology, is part of a wider grassroots initiative aiming to make coding and digital skills accessible and fun for education-and-self-development, breaking barriers and introducing other gadgets associated with the digital universe.
