Updated Article:

After four decades, it's official! A "Goonies" sequel is in the works, and industry insider "Variety" has the scoop. The production team has tapped Potsy Ponciroli (43) to pen the script for this highly anticipated return to the big screen. Steven Spielberg (78), the OG producer, and Chris Columbus (66), the original scriptwriter, are back, ready to embark on this new adventure. Though plot details remain under wraps, we can't wait to see what the dynamic duo has in store for us.

The Original Story

Back when VCRs were still a thing, an ensemble of young stars took the world by storm. The original lineup included Josh Brolin (57), Sean Astin (53), Corey Feldman (53), Ke Huy Quan (53), and Martha Plimpton (54). In this classic children's adventure film, they discovered an ancient pirate treasure map hidden in their attic. Seeking to save their parents' homes from demolition for a swanky country club, the adventurous bunch set off on a wild quest. This timeless gem grossed around $125 million worldwide on a production budget of approximately $19 million.

A Possible Reunion?

Rumors of a sequel started swirling as early as February, when Ke Huy Quan hinted at a "Goonies" reunion at his film premiere. During the event, he shared his enthusiasm for a sequel, stating, "I would love for it to happen." His co-star, Corey Feldman, added to the excitement by simply saying, "Let's all get together. Everyone looks good. Sean looks good. Josh looks good. We all still look good, and we're all still alive."

As of now, no release date has been announced, and no official cast members have been confirmed. However, the cast is chomping at the bit, with Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green all mentioned as possible returnees.

The script is currently being crafted by Potsy Ponciroli, with Chris Columbus contributing as a producer. Meanwhile, Amblin Entertainment has Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario backing the project, with Lauren Shuler Donner serving as executive producer. The project is still in the early stages, with no director attached yet.

So, buckle up for this nostalgic rollercoaster ride! With such a talented lineup and the masterminds behind the original at the helm, there's no doubt this sequel is going to be a hit. But until we have more details, we can only wait with bated breath.
