"Questions Arising Over School Construction Plans in Laim": Critics Voice Concerns

A new school building project in Munich's Laim district, scheduled to house a three-year primary school, an additional high school grade, and two sports halls, remains a contentious issue. The construction site overlaps with existing sports facilities and green spaces, leading to ongoing debates and delays.

Project Details

The new school building, planned to be held in earth tones and ranging from one to four stories high, will be located on Riegerhofweg. The sports facilities officially belong to the city of Munich, and the building permit for the project is set to be submitted by the end of July.

Timeline

Initial planning for the school complex began several years ago, following demographic studies predicting increased student numbers. Public discussions and hearings took place around 2023-2024. Construction was originally planned to begin in late 2024 or early 2025, but due to unresolved conflicts and review processes, construction has been delayed.

Challenges

One of the main challenges is the potential loss of sports facilities, as the new school building could require the SV Laim to give up half a football field or even a whole one for excavation. Additionally, the sports halls will be completely buried in the ground. Environmental concerns have also been raised, with residents and groups worried about the impact on local green spaces and biodiversity.

Reactions

The local sports club, TSG 1881 München-Riem, has publicly opposed the project in its current form, expressing concerns over the loss of sports fields crucial for youth programs and community activities. City councilor and BA member Alexandra Gaßmann (CSU) supports the construction of new schools in Munich but is critical of the disruption caused to Laim.

Josef Mögele (SPD), chairman of the Laim district committee, is skeptical about the construction plan and believes it will take longer and cause more inconvenience to residents. Many residents have expressed frustration over the potential loss of green spaces and increased traffic, staging protests and petitions.

Communication and Updates

To keep residents informed about the construction progress, information boards will be installed. The Lukas School and the building plans are in close exchange with the directly adjacent residents (two buildings of a cooperative and a rental building) to ensure regular updates and short-term communication.

Preliminary construction work is planned to begin in the fall. As new developments occur, updates will be shared to keep the community informed.

This new school building project, scheduled to accommodate education-and-self-development opportunities such as a three-year primary school and an additional high school grade, also includes two sports halls for learning through physical activities. Despite the ongoing debates and delays due to potential loss of sports facilities and green spaces, the project remains a contentious issue in Munich's Laim district.
