In a new chapter of his career, 34-year-old Philip Espe has joined the United States Marine Band as its Librarian and Historian. This esteemed band, celebrating its 225th anniversary this year, is now home to a dedicated individual who brings a wealth of experience and passion for music and history.

Before joining the Marine Band, Espe made a name for himself as the "Storytime Guy" at D.C. Public Library. His engaging storytimes captivated children and adults alike, earning him a reputation for his ability to make learning enjoyable and accessible.

Espe's background in military families, coupled with his experience as a youth services associate at D.C. Public Library, has equipped him with a unique perspective that he brings to his new role. In addition to his work with children at outreach events, Espe is now responsible for preserving the band's rich history through its archives.

The band's library houses an extensive collection of sheet music and arrangements, including original, handwritten scores from John Philip Sousa's "Semper Fidelis" march, written in 1888. Espe's handling of these historical documents often serves as a "lightbulb moment" for Marines touring the collection, providing a tangible connection to the band's storied past.

Espe's approach to music and art is rooted in the belief that perfection is not necessary. He emphasizes the importance of creating, learning, and sharing, regardless of one's skill level. This philosophy is evident in his workshops for library workers, where he teaches them to select songs that integrate cultural and historical elements, fostering a deeper connection with the audience.

Prior to his work at the library, Espe studied clarinet performance and later earned a master's of music in orchestral conducting. He also directed community and youth orchestras, honing his skills as a conductor and educator.

As the United States Marine Band continues to celebrate its 225th anniversary, Espe's addition to the team is a testament to the organisation's commitment to preserving its history while also looking towards the future. With Espe's passion for music, history, and education, the band is poised to continue its legacy of excellence for generations to come.
